What makes ROOTWAR

A real competitive MMO that fits in a browser tab: every move matters, every player is a target.

  1. PvP that actually matters

Scan a district, pick a target and launch the breach. A successful hack steals part of their credits and earns you reputation; a failed one exposes you.

  2. Crews and territory wars

Up to 25 hackers per crew. Hack relays, capture districts and unlock an income bonus for your whole team.

  3. ELO-ranked arena

Real-time duels: hex codes, Caesar ciphers, number sequences, binary. The fastest correct answer wins the round, from Script kiddie all the way up to Root.

  4. Zero-Day events

Every two hours a giant exploit spawns in a district. The whole server teams up to take it down before it escapes.

  5. Competitive seasons

Seasons last four weeks. The champion, the top 10 and the top 100 earn exclusive rewards that can never be bought.

  6. Cosmetics only

UI themes, hack effects, frames, titles: the shop sells style, never power. Crypto payments only.

A real hacker game, one click away

ROOTWAR is an online hacking game built for the browser: nothing to download and no account needed to start. Hit “Play for free” and you get a terminal, a starter rig and 500 credits. You play as a guest first, then claim your name whenever you like without losing any progress.

The core loop is simple and dangerously addictive: upgrade your hardware, scan the network, launch breaches against corporate servers or other players, then protect your loot. Play with the mouse or straight from a terminal that understands real commands such as scan, hack npc 12 or upgrade cracker.

The network is a fictional world of 16 districts, from Neon Docks to The Mainframe. No real hacking skill is required or taught: it is a strategy and reflex game with a cyberpunk skin.

How you progress in ROOTWAR

Your rig has seven modules. The cracker and CPU drive your attack power, the firewall your defense, the miner your passive credits, the vault the size of your bank and the share of credits nobody can steal, stealth keeps you anonymous after a successful hack, and memory unlocks up to five simultaneous operations.

  • Corporate servers (PvE): fixed targets in every district, perfect for your first hours and first upgrades.
  • Players (PvP): the real challenge. You steal 8% to 25% of your target’s unprotected credits and earn reputation.
  • District relays: crew-only targets used to conquer territory.

Every operation shows its success chance before you launch it, based on your attack against their defense. Play it safe or go for the big score, your call. The beginner guide covers your first hours, and hacking other players explains loot, identity reveals and revenge.

A competitive, fair MMO

Competition is what ROOTWAR is about. Five leaderboards are recomputed every minute: season reputation, arena ELO, level, crew points and Zero-Day damage. Every season starts from scratch so anyone can make a run for the top, while past results stay on record.

Built-in protections keep it fair: a 24-hour shield for newcomers, a 20-minute shield after being breached, no targeting players far below your level (unless it is revenge), and diminishing returns if you keep hitting the same victim. Veterans hunt veterans, and beginners get room to learn.

Above all, you cannot buy power. Shop Shards only unlock cosmetics. The only way to dominate is to outplay everyone else.

Crews, districts and territory wars

Alone you survive; in a crew you rule. A crew gathers up to 25 hackers, with a leader, officers and a private chat channel. Members hack district relays to pile up control points. Pass 50 points while leading the race and the district flies your banner.

Every controlled district pays 1 season point per minute to the crew and +5% income to every member (up to +40%). Members whose node sits on crew turf also get +15% defense. Control erodes over time, though, so you have to hold the line. The crews and territory guide has every detail.

Arena, Zero-Days and seasons

The arena hosts real-time ranked duels: each round both players get the same hacking puzzle and the first correct answer scores. First to three rounds wins. Your ELO sets your tier, from Script kiddie to Root, and reaching Root unlocks an exclusive theme and frame.

Zero-Days are world bosses: an exploit appears in a district for 15 minutes, with hit points scaled to how many hackers are online. Everyone strikes, rewards are split by damage dealt, and the top agent earns the “Zero-Day Hunter” title.

Four-week seasons crown a champion. Check the live leaderboard and the season page to see who is leading.

Lightweight and fast, on desktop and mobile

ROOTWAR is engineered to load fast and run anywhere: responsive interface, animated network map, Matrix-style code rain, synthesized sound effects and particle effects that cost nothing when nothing moves. Animations can be toned down in one click, and the game honours your system’s “reduced motion” setting.

Play on a desktop at lunch, pick it up again on your phone on the train: once your account is claimed, your progress follows you everywhere.

The zero pay-to-win promise

Shards ◆ can only be bought with crypto and only buy cosmetics: themes, effects, frames, titles. No stats for sale, no shortcuts: only your skill moves you up the leaderboard.

Frequently asked questions

Is ROOTWAR really free?

Yes. The whole game is free and will stay free: progression, PvP, crews, arena, events and seasons. Only optional cosmetics are for sale.

Do I need to download or install anything?

No. ROOTWAR runs in any recent browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on desktop, tablet and smartphone.

Will I learn real hacking?

No. The network, the companies and the attacks are entirely fictional. ROOTWAR is a strategy game with a hacker vibe, not an offensive security course.

Can I pay to win?

No. Shards bought with crypto only unlock visual items (themes, effects, frames, titles, emotes). No stat can be bought.

How does crypto payment work?

Pick a Shard pack, a secure checkout page opens (BTC, ETH, USDT, LTC…) and your Shards are credited automatically once the blockchain confirms the payment.

Can I play without an account?

Yes. You start as a guest and can claim your account at any time with a name and a password, keeping all your progress.

What happens if I get hacked while offline?

You lose part of your unprotected credits, never everything: the vault protects a share of your bank and you get a 20-minute shield. Your logs tell you who hit you whenever they were identified.

What is a crew and how do I join one?

A crew is a team of up to 25 players. Open crews can be joined in one click from the Crew tab, or you can found your own for 5,000 credits.

How long does a season last?

Four weeks. When it ends the rankings are archived, the best players receive exclusive badges, titles and frames, and a new season begins.

Does the game work on mobile?

Yes. The interface adapts to small screens with a tab bar, a slide-up terminal and a touch-friendly map (pinch to zoom).

Ready to get root?
