Crews and territory: conquer the network as a team

A lone hacker can get rich. An organised crew can own the city. In ROOTWAR, teams fight over the 16 districts of the network by hacking their relays: every district held earns season points and raises the income of every member. Here is how to build an effective team and win the territory war.

What is a crew?

A crew is a team of up to 25 players, identified by a name, a 2 to 5-character tag (for example [NGH]) and a colour shown on the network map whenever the team controls a district. Every crew has a private chat channel and a message of the day to coordinate raids.

There are three roles. The leader can promote, demote, kick and hand over leadership. Officers can kick regular members and change the settings (message of the day, colour, open or closed). Members hack, chat and enjoy the bonuses. If the leader leaves, the longest-serving officer takes over, otherwise the longest-serving member; when the last member leaves, the crew is disbanded.

Join or found a team

Open the Crew tab: crews are listed by season points and can be filtered by name or tag. An open crew can be joined in one click while there is room; a closed crew accepts nobody, which lets a team lock its roster.

To found your own team you need a registered account and 5,000 credits. Pick a name of 3 to 24 characters, an upper-case tag and a colour that stands out on the map. You become leader right away. Tip: recruit in the global chat by stating your goals (target districts, raid times), it works far better than an empty crew waiting for walk-ins.

Relays and control points

Every district has a relay, listed at the top of the scan results. Only crew members can hack it. Its defense depends on the district tier, it matches a corporate server one tier higher, and it rises by another 25% once the district belongs to a crew.

Each successful relay hack earns your crew 5 control points, plus 1 point for every 5 levels of the hacker, and gives you 30 XP. The relay then cools down for 2 minutes for you, but not for your teammates. Ten members striking at once push a capture ten times faster.

Capture and hold a district

A district belongs to the crew with the most points, provided it has at least 50. The map draws a control ring around each district in the colours of the top three crews, so you can see who leads the race and how close a capture is.

Control is never permanent: every score is multiplied by 0.95 every 10 minutes. An abandoned district eventually turns back into a free zone, and an active rival can overtake you overnight. Holding territory takes regular hacks, ideally spread across members in different time zones.

What territory pays

  • Season points: 1 point per controlled district per minute, i.e. 60 points per hour per district. They drive the crew leaderboard.
  • Income bonus: +5% mining for every member per district owned, up to +40% (eight districts).
  • Home defense: +15% defense for members whose node sits in a crew district.
  • Hardened relays: your relays are 25% harder for rivals to hack.

Key point: the income bonus and season points are the same whatever the district tier. Tier-1 and tier-2 districts, with weak relays, are therefore the easiest to take and to keep; The Mainframe is a prestige trophy that is very expensive to defend.

Strategy: running a crew

  1. Concentrate your forces: holding three neighbouring districts firmly beats skimming eight contested zones.
  2. Group your nodes: move your rig into a crew district to get the +15% defense. A move costs 300 × tier² credits (300 ₵ at tier 1, 1,200 ₵ at tier 2, 2,700 ₵ at tier 3).
  3. Schedule raids: post the time in the message of the day and strike together; rivals will struggle to react.
  4. Watch the decay: a regular pass on each relay is enough to offset the 5% loss every 10 minutes.
  5. Use Zero-Days: when an event breaks out in a district, players flock there, the perfect time to defend your turf or hit someone else’s.

The crew leaderboard is public and updated continuously. To go further, read seasons and rankings.

Frequently asked questions

How much does founding a crew cost?

5,000 credits, and you need a registered account. Guests can join an open crew but cannot found one.

Can I hack a member of my own crew?

No. Teammates are protected from each other, which prevents betrayals and disguised credit transfers.

What happens if my crew is disbanded?

Its control points disappear from every district, which may turn back into free zones. Members keep their level, rig and credits.

Do I need a crew to earn season points?

No: season reputation can be earned solo. But only crews score the territory points that make up the crew leaderboard.
