Seasons and leaderboards: aiming for the top
ROOTWAR is a competitive game. Every month a new season resets the counters and gives everyone a shot at becoming champion. Here is how the five leaderboards work, what happens when a season ends and how to pile up reputation faster than your rivals.
The rhythm of a season
A season lasts four weeks. The countdown is shown in the game’s top bar and on the public current season page. Throughout the season your actions feed your season reputation, separate from your lifetime reputation, which never goes down.
A season has its highlights: Zero-Days every two hours, crew territory wars raging day and night, and a final sprint where every point counts. The players who finish best are rarely the most active on a single day, but the most consistent over a month.
The five leaderboards
| Leaderboard | What counts |
|---|---|
| Season | Reputation earned since the season started |
| Arena | Your ranked-duel ELO |
| Level | Your level, then your experience within it |
| Crews | Crew season points, earned by holding districts |
| Zero-Day | Damage dealt during the latest Zero-Day |
Each leaderboard shows the top 100, recomputed every minute, with players’ cosmetics (name colour, badge, crew tag). Your own rank is shown even if you are outside the top. Guest accounts are included too, so there is no reason to wait before joining the race. Browse the public leaderboard without even logging in.
How to earn reputation
- Hack players: the main source. Aiming above your level pays much more, and hitting the same target over and over pays less and less.
- Repel breaches: every failed attack against you gives you 3 points, so a good firewall also pushes you up the rankings.
- Shine during Zero-Days: the top 20 agents of a defeated Zero-Day earn 5 to 50 points.
On the other hand, each failed hack against a player costs 4 points. Reputation never drops below zero, but repeated failures seriously slow a season down. The hacking other players guide explains how to pick profitable targets.
What happens when a season ends
When the countdown hits zero, the server archives the top 100 of the Season, Arena and Crews leaderboards, then hands out rewards:
- Champion (#1 in season reputation): Champion badge, “Season Champion” title and an animated Champion avatar frame;
- Top 10: Top 10 badge;
- Top 100: Top 100 badge;
- Season 1 only: every registered account receives the Founder badge.
These items are never for sale: they prove a result. Then season reputation restarts from zero, and so do crew season points, while every ELO is pulled halfway back towards 1,000 (a player at 1,600 restarts at 1,300). Your level, rig, credits and cosmetics are kept.
Strategy for a great season
- Build early: in the first days, invest in the cracker, stealth and memory to chain profitable, discreet hacks.
- Protect your points: do not launch attacks on players below 40% success, the reputation loss quickly wipes out your gains.
- Never miss a Zero-Day: 15 minutes of steady strikes can earn as much reputation as an evening of PvP.
- Play as a team: a crew holding three districts scores 180 season points per hour on the crew leaderboard.
- Save energy for the end: the last hours are often the most contested.
If you prefer pure competition, the Arena leaderboard depends only on your reflexes: see the arena guide.
Your public profile
Every registered player has a public profile page showing their level, arena tier, crew, statistics and latest duels. It becomes visible to search engines from level 5, just like the pages of crews with at least three members, a way to make your name known well beyond the game.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a season?
Four weeks. The time left is shown in the game’s top bar and on the Season page.
Do I lose my level when a season ends?
No. Only season reputation and crew season points reset, and ELO is pulled towards 1,000. Everything else is kept.
Can guests be ranked?
Yes, they appear on the leaderboards. However, the season 1 Founder badge is reserved for registered accounts.
Can season rewards be bought?
No. End-of-season badges, titles and frames are never sold in the shop: they can only be earned on the leaderboard.
